Infosys is my life: SD Shibulal

21051452[1] Despite the solid performance in first quarter of the current fiscal year, Infosys has adopted a "cautiously optimistic" stance and left its full-year growth forecast unchanged. In the third quarter of the last fiscal also, the Bangalore-based company delivered a surprisingly robust performance, only to slump back in the quarter after that.

Acknowledging the volatility in performance, in an interview with N Shivapriya and Akanksha Prasad, chief executive officer SD Shibulal cautioned against drawing conclusions about a secular trend based on a single quarter's performance. While he described analysts as "experts", Shibulal refused to comment on why they are getting Infosys estimates wrong quarter after quarter. Edited excerpts:

In the last three quarters, including this one, analyst forecasts have failed to get Infosys' performance right. In your view, why is this happening?

Our performance has been volatile in the last few quarters. Even at the end of Q3, we said that a single quarter's performance cannot be taken as a secular trend. This quarter we have done reasonably well and we have not changed our guidance. We have a few challenges which we are trying to address - high quality growth is one of them, plus there are also challenges on the cost side because salary increases will have an impact. We have to mitigate these through various methods. I do not want to comment about why analysts are getting it wrong; they are the experts. I do acknowledge that our performance has been volatile. This is one of the reasons why we are optimistically cautious and have not changed our guidance. Our guidance is a statement of fact and not a statement of hope.

Does this quarter's performance feela vindication for you?

If we look at this quarter, we have achieved 2.7% growth. On constant currency, the growth is around 3.4%, which means we lost around $40 million due to currency volatility for the quarter.

You referred to certain steps the company undertook earlier that are showing results now. What are they?

Part of the overall Infosys 3.0 strategy was to grow the consulting and system integration business, which is now strong. The second aim was to achieve balanced growth. The Business IT Services division was growing below the company's average, so we brought in a lot of focus into that segment. Our target is to bring it on a par with the company's growth rate although as a percentage of the overall revenue it may not increase because other divisions are growing faster.

What is your strategy to win large deals?

We are working on multi-tower solutions and alliancesthe one we have with IPSoft. Since business IT services is price sensitive, we need to ensure that we bring tools, automation, and operational efficiency. It is tough to balance margins and growth, but we have done it for many years and we will do it again.

What are some of the changes you are making?

There have been changes and it is part of the overall strategy. Despite competition getting aggressive and poaching people, in the last two years, we increased our sales force800 to 1,200. It depends on the way you look at the glass - half full or half empty.

For Narayana Murthy, Infosys isa middle child. What is Infosys to you?

For me, Infosys is life. Most of my life has been spent here.

With your term ending in 2015, has the company set in motion the succession planning process?

We have a nominations committee, which has the responsibility for it. They are looking at it.

Why You Need to Create and Protect Strong Email Passwords

It is important for several reasons to have a strong password on your e-mail and web site accounts. Your email account is the gateway into your personal information including web banking, investment accounts, and other websites that store your personal information online. There is also a growing trend of spammers breaking into e-mail accounts with weak passwords and using them to send massive amounts of spam which can lead to your ISP closing your e-mail account before you even realize that there is a problem.

The following are examples of weak passwords that must be avoided:

    • temp
    • password
    • change me
    • having the same username and password
    • sequences such as abcd, 1234, and abc123.
    • the last 4 digits of your social security number
    • your birthday or the birthday of someone close to you

To create a strong password please use a combination of the following guidelines:

    • Mix capital and lowercase letters, numbers, and use punctuation.
    • Create passwords that are over 8 characters long.
    • Use the first letters from a phrase or sentence that you can remember.
    • Substitute numbers, misspellings, and punctuation into phrase and sentence based passwords.

Now we will use the above recommendations to create a new strong password.

An example phrase is "Talk to the hand because the face ain't listening".

-Use all of the first letters: ttthbtfal
-Then capitalize every other letter: TtThBtFaL
    -Substitute in some numbers: T2ThBtF8L
-Add some punctuation and generate our new strong password: T2T&btF8L!

Now that you have a strong password you need to protect it!

Lastly, I recently learned a great tip about reminder questions and how to protect your passwords.

Lie! When you are asked by a site that you trust to provide your mothers maiden name, name of first pet, fathers first job, the city you grew up in, or your zip code, do not give an honest answer. Create a fake history for yourself with funny answers that are untruthful but you will be easily able to remember when asked the questions. It is possible for a lot to be learned about some people by reading the information they have posted in casual conversations, e-mail threads, chats, and internet forums.

How to Use Google Chrome For Secure Web Surfing by Default

If you have ever shared a log on or computer for your web browsing you'll know how annoying it can be not to have secure web surfing. Organize a surprise party or weekend away and then a list of hotels appears in your partners browser next time she logs on. It's almost like you share a common surfing history in the house.

Let's face it perhaps you don't want your kids to visit all the same web sites as you!

There's nothing ground breaking in Chromes Incognito mode but it is a very useful feature. Switch to Incognito mode and your web surfing instantly becomes a little more secure.

This is how you can use Chrome for secure web browsing, simply right click on the Chrome Shortcut on your desktop, select properties and you should see the shortcut menu appear.

    1) Right Click on Chrome Shortcut on Desktop
    2) Select Properties
    3) On Shortcut menu add the following to target shortcut menu -incognito

Therefore every time you start Chrome using that shortcut now you will be in 'incognito mode'. If you just want to use this mode occasionally then you can select a 'incognito' windows from the file menu.

All the web sites you visit are now not recorded in your history, all cookies are deleted when you close. There's no trace of the web sites stored on your computer at all. Most of the browsers offer similar functionality now but most have to be done manually (so people forget). Overall I guess Firefox with it's multitude of plug-ins and open source model will hopefully produce the ultimate secure browsing. I'll have a look at these options in a later article.

Of course, it's a long, long way from real secure web surfing, we still use HTTP which means your browsing is in clear text. Your browsing history and IP address are also stored on the web site you visit, on the ISP logs. But it is a start and at least can keep your PC holding a huge list of your web browsing.

If you want the ultimate secure browsing, have a look here - Secure Surfing Protection

    KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HTTP:// & HTTPS://

The main difference between http:// and https:// is It's all about keeping you secure.

HTTP stands for Hypertext Transport Protocol, which is just a fancy way of saying it's a protocol (a language, in a manner of speaking) for information to be passed back and forth between web servers and clients.

The important thing is the letter S which makes the difference between HTTP and HTTPS.

The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure".

If you visit a website or webpage, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://.

This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecure' language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.

This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an http website!

But if the web address begins with https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.

You understand why this is so important, right?

If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://.

If it doesn't, there's no way you're going to enter sensitive information like a credit card number!

    The Best E-Mail Program Ever

    How Gmail destroyed Outlook.

As of this week, Gmail has reached perfection: You no longer have to be online to read or write messages. Desktop programs like Microsoft Outlook have always been able to access your old mail. There is a certain bliss to this; if you've got a pile of letters that demand well-composed, delicate responses (say you're explaining to your boss why you ordered that $85,000 rug), unplugging the Internet can be the fastest way to get things done. That's why offline access is a killer feature—it destroys your last remaining reason for suffering through a desktop e-mail program.

Google's not alone in providing this option. Microsoft's Windows Live Mail, Yahoo's Zimbra, and the mail app made by the Web startup Zoho, among other services, also provide some measure of untethered e-mail access. For now, Google calls this addition "experimental"—you've got to turn it on explicitly, and the company is asking users to report any bugs—but I found it easy to set up and a delight to use.

To get offline access, you first need to download and install a small program called Google Gears (except if you're using Google's Chrome browser, which comes with Gears built in). Then, after you enable Gmail's offline capability, the system will download two months of your most recent messages, which should take 30 minutes to an hour. Now you're good to go: When you're offline, type www.gmail.com into your browser, log in—yes, Gears enables you to log in even when you don't have a Web connection—and there's your e-mail. Though I work from home and rarely find myself away from a hot Wi-Fi connection, I shut off my router and parked myself on my couch for about an hour yesterday. I loaded up Gmail on my laptop, and it responded seamlessly—I could read, search through, and respond to any message I'd received during the last two months, all through the familiar Web interface. Eureka! I'll never again be mailless on a plane, a subway, or anyplace else where you don't have the Web but do have a lot of time to kill.

How to Setup an Out-of-Office Auto-Reply Message Without Exchange Server

Microsoft Outlook allows you to set a rule on your account to automatically check incoming messages and reply with a designated email to let your contacts know that you are out of the office. The following are step-by-step instructions on setting up such a rule:

    1. Open Microsoft Outlook.
    2. Click on "New," to open a new email message.
    3. There, type in the subject line and body as you would like the auto-reply message to show. Leave the "To" line blank.
    4. Click, "File," and then "Save As" to save the file. In the "Save as Type" box, select "Outlook Template .oft."
Note: If you do not see the "Outlook Template.oft" option here, you must make Outlook the default email editor. To do so, click "Tools," "Options," the "Mail Format" tab, uncheck the box that says "Use Microsoft Word to Edit Email Messages," click "Apply," and then "OK."
    5. Close the email message you just created.
    6. When Outlook asks you if you want to save the message, select "No."
    7. Open the Rules screen by clicking "Tools" and then "Rules and Alerts."
    8. Click on "New Rule."
    9. Select "Start from a blank rule."
    10. Select "Check messages when they arrive."
    11. Click "Next."
    12. Do not check any of the boxes under "Which condition(s) do you want to check."
    13. Click "Next."
    14. When the box pops up asking "This rule will be applied to every message you receive. Is this correct?" - Click "Yes."
    15. Under "Step 1," click the box next to "reply using a specific template."
    16. Under "Step 2," click on the link "a specific template."
    17. Click the arrow next to "Look In."
    18. Select "User Templates in the File System."
    19. Click on the Out of Office Reply you created in step 3. The name will be whatever you wrote as the subject of the email.
    20. Click Open.
    21. Click "Next" on the Rules Wizard two times (on the "What do you want to do with the message?" and "Are there any exceptions?" screens.
    22. If you want to turn on the auto-reply message immediately, click finish. If you would like to wait to turn on the auto-reply later, uncheck the "Turn on this rule" box and click finish.
    23. Click "Apply" to save
    24. Click "OK" to exit
    25. If you left the "Turn on this rule" box checked, your Out of Office Auto-Reply is now working!
    26. You can test it's functionality by sending yourself an email doing a send/receive two times. If you receive the test message and the auto-reply, you have completed the steps correctly!
    Additional Notes
Make Sure Your Rule Works - Leave Your Computer on!
The out of office auto-reply feature only works if you have your computer on, your Outlook open, and the email account sent to automatically send/receive. Make sure that you are set up to do so under "Tools," "Options," the "Mail Setup" tab, and "Send/Receive" option screen. You can schedule an automatic send/receive at any interval you prefer. Once your computer is set up correctly, you can put it in "Hibernate" mode, where you can continue to receive and reply to messages without leaving the computer in full power. To do so, click "Start," "Shut Down," and change the option box to "Hibernate." Feel free to turn off the monitor while you are gone and just leave the computer to silently check your mail.

Turning the Auto-Reply on at a Later Time
If you unchecked the "Turn on this rule" box during setup, you can turn on the auto reply at a later time by following these easy steps:

    1. In Outlook, click "Tools" and then "Rules and Alerts"
    2. Click the checkbox next to the rule you created.
    3. Click "Apply."
    4. Click "OK."
    5. Your rule is now turned on!

    Turning the Auto Reply Off
When you get back to the office, just follow these simple steps to turn the Auto-Reply off:
    1. Click "Tools" and select "Rules and Alerts"
    2. Uncheck the box next to the Auto-Reply rule
    3. Click "Apply"
    4. Click "OK"
    5. The rule is now turned off!

    Editing the Reply Message
After using the Out-of-Office reply once, you don't need to redo the whole process the next time you are out of the office. Follow the steps on the following slides to change your message:
    1. The trickiest part is finding the message again, click in the following order:
    Start Bar
    "My Computer"
    "Local Disk (C:)"
    "Documents and Settings"
Your Name (one folder will be the name of the computer)
    "Application Data"
    "Microsoft"
    "Templates"
Finally- The Out of Office Message! 2. First- so you never have to go through that again, right click on the email and select "Desktop (Create Shortcut)." That way, you can just open the file directly from there in the future.
    3. Edit the text of the message to read what you would like the Auto-Reply message to say.
    4. Click, "File," and then "Save As" to save the file.
    5. In the "Save as Type" box, select "Outlook Template .oft."
    6. Close the email message you just created.
    7. When Outlook asks "The file already exists. Do you want to replace the file?' Select "Yes."
    8. Turn on the rule using the directions above.

    Essential Web Development Tools

Developing a successful web site takes a great deal of planning and preparation. An important part of your preparation is obtaining the essential tools of the trade.

    HTML Editors

An HTML editor is a software program used to create and edit HTML documents.

Although some Internet marketers prefer to write their own HTML code, most prefer to use an HTML editor, as it can greatly simplify a somewhat difficult process. However, using an HTML editor has its disadvantages, as some editors have a tendency to add a lot of unnecessary coding and may not support the latest technologies.

Whether you will be writing your own HTML or using an editor, taking the time to learn HTML is very important. Not only will you gain your independence, but you'll also have the ability to add special effects that many HTML editors don't support.

Here are some popular HTML editors:

    Macromedia Dreamweaver
    http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/
A popular WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) HTML editor. Great for beginners and advanced users alike.

    Coffee Cup

A popular HTML editor that's great for beginners as well as advanced users. Includes a built in browser that will enable you to instantly preview your HTML as you go.

    Hot Dog Professional
    http://sausage.com/products/index.html
Three HTML editors, including HotDog Junior for children, PageWiz for the novice user and Professional for advanced and budding webmasters.

    Text Editors

A text editor is a software program used for editing plain text that doesn't add any special formatting.

If you're considering writing your own HTML code, you'll need a good text editor. Although it will certainly be more time consuming, your code will be much cleaner and can reduce your file size considerably.

In addition to using a text editor to write HTML, it can also be used to edit scripts and write articles.

If you have a Windows operating system, Note Pad is the preferred text editor. It should already be installed on your computer.

Although Note Pad is a great little text editor, it can't handle large files and is much better suited for smaller jobs. You may find that you'd like an editor that is more powerful, such as:

    NoteTab Pro http://www.notetab.com/
    TextPad http://www.textpad.com/

    FTP

File Transfer Protocol, better known as FTP, is a procedure used to upload and download files to and from your web server.

Although many HTML editors will enable you to edit and transfer pages to your server, an FTP program is still an essential tool, as you must have complete control over the files on your server.

An FTP program will enable you to upload scripts, set file permissions, create folders and transfer files to and from your server.

In order to use FTP, you'll need to download and install a software program on your computer. The most widely used FTP program is WS FTP Pro http://www.wsftp.com/

    Graphics Editor

A graphics editor is a software program that will enable you to design and edit graphics.

Graphic design is an intimidating subject for many Internet entrepreneurs. However, most of us must learn some basic design techniques in order to avoid the high costs of hiring a professional designer.

The most popular program used by Internet marketers is Paint Shop Pro. This powerful program is the only program you'll need to design professional looking graphics.

    Zip/Unzip Software

A Zip file is an "archive" of one or more files compressed into one file for easy distribution.

Zip files are used to compress and transport file archives over the Internet. It is the preferred method used for electronic file distribution, as rather than downloading several different files, you can simply download one Zip file. In addition, the download time will be minimized, as the files within the Zip archive are compressed.

Once a Zip file is downloaded, it can be easily opened and extracted (unzipped) with a Zip/Unzip software program.

Although there are many Zip software programs available on the Internet, WinZip is the most popular. WinZip makes working with file archives simple. It features an easy point-and-click, drag-and-drop interface for viewing, extracting, adding, deleting and testing archived files.

You can download a fully functional evaluation version here:

    Email

Although most Internet Service Providers include email accounts for their customers, these accounts aren't adequate for an Internet business -- especially if you get a large amount of email. Not only do the email addresses contain your ISP's name, but they are also very limited on features and options.

The two most popular email clients used online are Outlook and Eudora. These programs will enable you to download email from your server and offer features, such as sorting and
filtering, and will enable you to easily organize your email messages. What's more, your email address will be your own domain -- not someone else's.

    Outlook

Your webmaster toolbox will play an important part in your success. Take the time to ensure your toolbox contains these essential tools and you'll be well on your way to designing a professional web site.

    Web Design Tips

While designing web sites it is important to keep in the mind the platform, popularly used web browsers and of course the users. One more important element of website design is search engines compatibility, since eventually the search engines will index the site to present it to the users in a search. How much the search engines give importance to your website depends a lot on the how the website is designed.
These tips will help web designers to justify what is stated above.

    1) Use colors carefully such that they are brand appropriate or do justice to whatever the site is providing. This applies to the text, text fonts, background and the content provided.

    2) Use tag lines, which highlight the essential features of the site and catch the attention of the readers, since visitors do not read the text fully. Set your content in proper paragraphs and columns for increased readability and appearance.

    3) Avoid Flash and client side scripts on main pages. Do not use FRAMES since search engines find it difficult to index pages using the above technologies.

    4) Use high-resolution graphics which are light in weight for faster downloading. The images should add to the content and help in describing the sites resources and services. The images should be appropriately placed on the web pages. Use alt text to describe the images properly for photo optimization.

    5) For search engine optimization use descriptive title and meat tags since the search engine use these to some extent to index and rank your website.

    6) Avoid using gate away or doorway pages which lead to the main page this is spamming and your website may be banned by major search engines. Do not resort to cloaking and over use of keywords.

    7) Most important do not copy content from other websites to avoid facing duplicate content penalty. This was the practice widely resorted to earlier. It is wiser to have a content writer in the web development team.
