China renews operating license of Google

imageChina said that it has renewed Google's license to operate in the world's largest online market, after the US company last year moved its Chinese search engine overseas in protest over censorship.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology named Google's China website operator, Beijing Guxiang Information Technology Co. Ltd., as one of 137 firms whose licenses were renewed following adjustments in their operations.
The ministry had ordered the adjustments after some firms had changed shareholding structures without official permission, provided services beyond their approved business range or had lax information security controls.
The ministry, which posted the license renewals on its website, did not specify the kind of changes individual companies had to make.
Google spokeswoman for China Marsha Wang confirmed to AFP that the company had been granted the license renewal.
"We have passed the 2011 annual assessment (of the license)," she said.
This means Google's Internet content provider license in China has been extended for one more year, she said.
Google said in March last year it would no longer bow to government censors and effectively shut down its Chinese search engine, re-routing mainland users to its uncensored site in Hong Kong.
Google has maintained that such an approach complied with Chinese law.

The Famous Failed People - LUCK REALLY MATTERS

LUCK REALLY MATTERS

bill-gates-impersonator[1]

Bill Gates: Gates didn't seem like a shoe-in for success after dropping out of  Harvard and starting a failed first business with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen called Traf-O-Data. While this early idea didn't work, Gates' later work did, creating the global empire that is Microsoft.

eyerman-j-r-walt-disney-of-walt-disney-studios-posing-with-some-famous-cartoon-characters[1]Walt Disney: Today Disney rakes in billions from merchandise, movies and theme parks around the world, but Walt Disney himself had a bit of a rough start. He was fired by a newspaper editor because, "he lacked imagination and had no good ideas." After that, Disney started a number of businesses that didn't last too long and ended with bankruptcy and failure. He kept plugging along, however, and eventually found a recipe for success that worked.

albert-einstein-1[1]

Albert Einstein: Most of us take Einstein's name as synonymous with genius, but he didn't always show such promise. Einstein did not speak until he was four and did not read until he was seven, causing his teachers and parents to think he was mentally handicapped, slow and anti-social. Eventually, he was expelled from school and was refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic School. It might have taken him a bit longer, but most people would agree that he caught on pretty well in the end, winning the Nobel Prize and changing the face of modern physics.

darwin[1]

Charles Darwin: In his early years, Darwin gave up on having a medical career and was often chastised by his father for being lazy and too dreamy. Darwin himself wrote, "I was considered by all my masters and my father, a very ordinary boy, rather below the common standard of intellect." Perhaps they judged too soon, as Darwin today is well-known for his scientific studies.

churchilldm0302_468x542[1]

Winston Churchill: This Nobel Prize-winning, twice-elected Prime Minster of the United Kingdom wasn't always as well regarded as he is today. Churchill struggled in school and failed the sixth grade. After school he faced many years of political failures, as he was defeated in every election for public office until he finally became the Prime Minister at the ripe old age of 62.

2AbeLincoln1[1] Abraham Lincoln: While today he is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of the nation, Lincoln's life wasn't so easy. In his youth he went to war a captain and returned a private (if you're not familiar with military ranks, just know that private is as low as it goes.) Lincoln didn't stop failing there, however. He started numerous failed business and was defeated in numerous elections he made for public office.

The-Oprah-Winfrey-Show-s-Final-Date[1]Oprah Winfrey: Most people know Oprah as one of the most iconic faces on TV as well as one of the richest and most successful women in the world. Oprah faced a hard road to get to that position, however, enduring a rough and often abusive childhood as well as numerous career setbacks including being fired from her job as a television reporter because she was "unfit for tv."

Charlie-Chaplin_1[1] Charlie Chaplin: It's hard to imagine film without the iconic Charlie Chaplin, but his act was initially rejected by Hollywood studio chiefs because they felt it was a little too nonsensical to ever sell.

writer-JK-Rowling--001[1]J. K. Rowling: Rowling may be rolling in a lot of Harry Potter dough today, but  before she published the series of novels she was nearly penniless, severely depressed, divorced, trying to raise a child on her own while attending school and writing a novel. Rowling went from depending on welfare to survive to being one of the richest women in the world in a span of only five years through her hard work and determination.

Why You Need to Create and Protect Strong Email Passwords

It is important for several reasons to have a strong password on your e-mail and web site accounts. Your email account is the gateway into your personal information including web banking, investment accounts, and other websites that store your personal information online. There is also a growing trend of spammers breaking into e-mail accounts with weak passwords and using them to send massive amounts of spam which can lead to your ISP closing your e-mail account before you even realize that there is a problem.

The following are examples of weak passwords that must be avoided:

  • temp
  • password
  • change me
  • having the same username and password
  • sequences such as abcd, 1234, and abc123.
  • the last 4 digits of your social security number
  • your birthday or the birthday of someone close to you

To create a strong password please use a combination of the following guidelines:

  • Mix capital and lowercase letters, numbers, and use punctuation.
  • Create passwords that are over 8 characters long.
  • Use the first letters from a phrase or sentence that you can remember.
  • Substitute numbers, misspellings, and punctuation into phrase and sentence based passwords.

Now we will use the above recommendations to create a new strong password.

An example phrase is "Talk to the hand because the face ain't listening".

-Use all of the first letters: ttthbtfal
-Then capitalize every other letter: TtThBtFaL
-Substitute in some numbers: T2ThBtF8L
-Add some punctuation and generate our new strong password: T2T&btF8L!

Now that you have a strong password you need to protect it!

Lastly, I recently learned a great tip about reminder questions and how to protect your passwords.

Lie! When you are asked by a site that you trust to provide your mothers maiden name, name of first pet, fathers first job, the city you grew up in, or your zip code, do not give an honest answer. Create a fake history for yourself with funny answers that are untruthful but you will be easily able to remember when asked the questions. It is possible for a lot to be learned about some people by reading the information they have posted in casual conversations, e-mail threads, chats, and internet forums.

How to Use Google Chrome For Secure Web Surfing by Default

If you have ever shared a log on or computer for your web browsing you'll know how annoying it can be not to have secure web surfing. Organize a surprise party or weekend away and then a list of hotels appears in your partners browser next time she logs on. It's almost like you share a common surfing history in the house.

Let's face it perhaps you don't want your kids to visit all the same web sites as you!

There's nothing ground breaking in Chromes Incognito mode but it is a very useful feature. Switch to Incognito mode and your web surfing instantly becomes a little more secure.

This is how you can use Chrome for secure web browsing, simply right click on the Chrome Shortcut on your desktop, select properties and you should see the shortcut menu appear.

1) Right Click on Chrome Shortcut on Desktop
2) Select Properties
3) On Shortcut menu add the following to target shortcut menu -incognito

Therefore every time you start Chrome using that shortcut now you will be in 'incognito mode'. If you just want to use this mode occasionally then you can select a 'incognito' windows from the file menu.

All the web sites you visit are now not recorded in your history, all cookies are deleted when you close. There's no trace of the web sites stored on your computer at all. Most of the browsers offer similar functionality now but most have to be done manually (so people forget). Overall I guess Firefox with it's multitude of plug-ins and open source model will hopefully produce the ultimate secure browsing. I'll have a look at these options in a later article.

Of course, it's a long, long way from real secure web surfing, we still use HTTP which means your browsing is in clear text. Your browsing history and IP address are also stored on the web site you visit, on the ISP logs. But it is a start and at least can keep your PC holding a huge list of your web browsing.

Can Google Chrome Help Secure Web Browsing?

If you have to share a computer either at home, work or school then you'll soon realize that you leave a trace of your web history on the computer each time you use it - it's not exactly secure web browsing. This can be quite annoying at times, if you're trying to arrange a surprise, buy a gift then leaving a trail of web sites behind you can slightly give the surprise away.

There is of course even more serious side when so many of use the internet for lots of private stuff like banking, investments or research. Using a shared computer has a lot of risks to it so most of the browsers are introducing features to deal with this.

Google's Chrome browser has probably the most advanced of these features at the moment although there isn't a lot in it with IE and Firefox both offering similar features. The privacy mode in Chrome is called Incognito mode and it can help your web browsing become a little more secure.

To enable Chrome's Incognito mode just select a new incognito window from the file menu. Then all your web browsing is slightly more secure, no cookies are stored, no logons cached and history maintained on the PC you are using.

If you want to start this mode automatically follow this procedure.

1) Right Click on the Chrome Shortcut on the desktop
2) Click on Properties
3) On the Shortcut - just add the following to the target line -incognito

(make sure you leave a space and add outside the inverted commas)

Then every time you start Chrome using this shortcut it will run in incognito mode. This will prevent any details of your browsing being left behind on your computer and all the cookies will be automatically removed. There are unfortunately many other traces of your web history so this is not totally secure web browsing but it is an important step.

Of course, it's a long, long way from real secure web surfing, we still use HTTP which means your browsing is in clear text. Your browsing history and IP address are also stored on the web site you visit, on the ISP logs. But it is a start and at least can keep your PC holding a huge list of your web browsing.

Rs 500 laptop creates an unprecedented hype

New Delhi, Jan 31, 2009: India is set to bring another computer revolution with the launch of Rs 500 laptop. The government is planning to produce the computer on a mass scale to provide this unbelievably cheap computing device to thousands of students, schools and colleges across the country.

Tata Motor’s Nano car may not have hit the market even several months after its intended launch, but this nano computer should be a reality within a very short time.

So far the cheapest computer available in India costs somewhere around ten thousand rupees. This will be around twenty times cheaper than the cheapest available computer in the country.

The promised US$ 100 laptop christened as ‘The One Laptop Per Child’ has completely failed.

The project originally aimed for a price of 100 US dollars. In May 2006, project officials told the Red Hat's annual user summit: “It is a floating price. We are a nonprofit organization. We have a target of $100 by 2008, but probably it will be $135, maybe $140.” When the laptop started mass production in November 2007, the unit price was estimated to be $188 when bought by thousand units. At the same time, the laptop was made available under the "Give 1 Get 1" program at $199 for a single unit, or $399 for 2 units.

So how the Indian government plans to produce such cheep computing device?

The Rs 500 prototype that will come with 2 GB RAM capacity, would be on display in Tirupati on February 3 when the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Techology is launched.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given its approval for a new Centrally sponsored Scheme by the name of National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (ICT) submitted by the Ministry of HRD. An amount of Rs.4612 crore is to be incurred during the 11th Five Year Plan for the National Mission on Education through ICT. There is a budget provision of Rs.502 crore during the current financial year 2008-09. The National Mission on Education through ICT has been envisaged as a Centrally sponsored Scheme to leverage the potential of ICT, in providing high quality personalized and interactive knowledge modules over the internet/intranet for all the learners in Higher Education Institutions in any time any where mode. This is expected to be a major intervention in enhancing the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in Higher Education by 5 percentage points during the XI Five year Plan period and in ensuring access and equity in Higher Education, as also recommended by the Oversight of Committee and the National Knowledge Commission.

The Mission has two major components viz., (a) content generation and (b) connectivity along with provision for access devices for institutions and learners. It seeks to bridge the digital divide, i.e. the gap in the skills to use computing devices for the purpose of teaching and learning among urban and rural teachers/learners in Higher Education domain and empower those, who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to joint the mainstream of the knowledge economy.

National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology would seek to extend computer infrastructure and connectivity to over 18,000 colleges in the country, including each department of nearly 400 universities and institutions of national importance. The mission would focus on appropriate e-learning procedures, providing facility of performing experiments through virtual laboratories, online testing and certification, online availability of teachers to guide and mentor learners, and utilization of EduSat and DTH.

The Best E-Mail Program Ever

How Gmail destroyed Outlook.

As of this week, Gmail has reached perfection: You no longer have to be online to read or write messages. Desktop programs like Microsoft Outlook have always been able to access your old mail. There is a certain bliss to this; if you've got a pile of letters that demand well-composed, delicate responses (say you're explaining to your boss why you ordered that $85,000 rug), unplugging the Internet can be the fastest way to get things done. That's why offline access is a killer feature—it destroys your last remaining reason for suffering through a desktop e-mail program.

Google's not alone in providing this option. Microsoft's Windows Live Mail, Yahoo's Zimbra, and the mail app made by the Web startup Zoho, among other services, also provide some measure of untethered e-mail access. For now, Google calls this addition "experimental"—you've got to turn it on explicitly, and the company is asking users to report any bugs—but I found it easy to set up and a delight to use.

To get offline access, you first need to download and install a small program called Google Gears (except if you're using Google's Chrome browser, which comes with Gears built in). Then, after you enable Gmail's offline capability, the system will download two months of your most recent messages, which should take 30 minutes to an hour. Now you're good to go: When you're offline, type www.gmail.com into your browser, log in—yes, Gears enables you to log in even when you don't have a Web connection—and there's your e-mail. Though I work from home and rarely find myself away from a hot Wi-Fi connection, I shut off my router and parked myself on my couch for about an hour yesterday. I loaded up Gmail on my laptop, and it responded seamlessly—I could read, search through, and respond to any message I'd received during the last two months, all through the familiar Web interface. Eureka! I'll never again be mailless on a plane, a subway, or anyplace else where you don't have the Web but do have a lot of time to kill.

Yahoo and Infosys-Axon deal

The year 2008 must be one Yahoo will like to forget.
The year started with Microsoft proposing Yahoo $31 a share buyout. The bid is rejected by Yahoo board of directors saying it "substantially undervalues" the company. Yahoo reportedly explores alternative deals with News Corp, Google and Time Warner unit AOL. In May Microsoft revises its offer to $33 a share, which is gain rejected by Yahoo.

The chief executive Jerry Yang kept waiting for the software giant to offer a better price than $47.5 billion for Yahoo. It never happened. Instead, Yahoo's stock sagging and hits nearly five-year lows. Yahoo's plan 2, an advertising deal with Google too failed, after Google out of the deal fearing a court battle with the US Justice Department.

In November Yang steps down and Yahoo, in December, overhauled its severance plan which was apparently hiked to discourage Microsoft's acquisition plans.

Yahoo chairman Roy Bostock's had planned to name a new CEO before 2009; however, with 2009 almost on the doorsteps, it seems tough.

Infosys-Axon deal
Infosys-Axon deal was hailed as the largest outbound acquisition by an Indian IT company. The analysts termed Axon as strategic fit for Infosys.

Then came the rumours that there was competition: a rival UK security firm has quoting a price higher by 7 pence per share to counter Infosys' offer.

But the software giant was confident. MD and CEO, S Gopalakrishnan said that the company can sail through the deal with its transaction advantage of a full cash deal offer.

However, it seems the Indian IT giant underestimated its rivals, tough competition was there, and closer home. In October, HCL Technologies makes a counter offer to Infosys' Axon bid by raising the value by 8.3 per cent to seal the biggest overseas deal by an Indian firm in this space. The deal got shareholder's nod in November.

Separate personal and official IDs

The best way to avoid such a situation is to have two email IDs with separate and long passwords -- one official, the other for personal use. Not only it will leave you better organised, but is the easiest way to keep cyber criminals at bay.

Also, be sure of the password you use. Remember, while easy passwords leave little room for forgetting, they leave a lot of scope for tinkering by cyber hackers.

With Internet becoming an important repository of our personal information both financial and otherwise, the stakes can be high if the same is tampered with.

So try using some mixed combos that can secure your mail. Length is a huge advantage to memorise your password. And always remember your name, spouse name, children names or birthdays are a strict no no.

How to boost Windows Vista speed

Windows 7 with its commendable performance improvements may be on the horizon. But for now, most of us have to live with Windows Vista, which can make even the fastest computer seem slow.

But you don't have to put up with Vista's sluggishness without a fight. In fact, most of what ails Vista when it comes to performance can be remedied by adjusting some settings and eliminating some features.

And the good news: The whole process need not take more than half an hour. Afterwards, you'll be rewarded a computer that feels a lot faster.

Google Notebook

Google has also halted further active development on Google Notebook, the free online application that lets users save and organise clips of information while conducting research online. Though the web giant will continue to maintain the service for current users, it will no longer add features nor will accept any new users.

The service lets users write notes, and to clip text, images, and links from pages during browsing. These are saved to an online "notebook" with sharing and collaboration features. Google Notebook works as an interactive scratch pad for any visited web pages, offering to collect web findings within the browser window.

Google in its blog wrote, "We will no longer support the Notebook Extension, but as always users who have already signed up will continue to have access to their data via the web interface. However, existing users won’t be able to use the browser extension, which makes the service significantly less useful. Among Google’s suggestions for replacements are SearchWiki, Google Docs, Tasks (Gmail), and Google Bookmarks."

Google Catalog

Google Catalog too faces axe. The service it launched in 2001 that made it possible to search the full text of hundreds and thousands of product catalogs. This was Google's first big effort to make offline information available online.

Catalogs helped to scan and make the full text of books available online. The search shown catalogs with pages that contain users search terms. Each listing shows the cover of the catalog, an image of the catalog page where the terms were found, and a close-up of the section of the page containing the terms.

The announcement was made by Ounit Soni, Google product manager, on the Inside Google Book Search blog. The posting said that Google's Catalog Search helped the search giant develop other key initiatives like Google Book Search, as well as learn about how users read scanned documents online.

Read the farewell note: “It was a great experiment.” Accepting that the service was not a great success the blog goes, “Nonetheless, in recent years, Catalog Search hasn't been as popular as some of our other products. So from (January 15), we're bidding it a fond farewell and focusing our efforts to bring more and more types of offline information such as magazines, newspapers and of course, books, online.”

Google Video Uploading

The web search giant bid farewell to its Google Video service last month, a free video sharing website and also a video search engine that allows users to upload video clips.

Though Google is not removing any content hosted on Google Video but users will no longer be able to upload new content to the service. The videos that are already in users account will remain hosted on Google Video. Users will have access to all the existing management tools for them.

The web giant in its blog post wrote, "In a few months, we will discontinue support for uploads to Google Video. We've always maintained that Google Video's strength is in the search technology that makes it possible for people to search videos from across the web, regardless of where they may be hosted. And this move will enable us to focus on developing these technologies further to the benefit of searchers worldwide."

Dodgeball

Dodgeball was a company that Google acquired in May 2005. The location-based meeting service allowed users to share their current locations using SMS messages. Come January 2009, the company announces that Dodgeball will be shut down "in the next couple of months."

Here goes the closure announcemet: "Google has decided to shut down dodgeball. I know this is kind of a bummer, but the site has been in maintenance mode for a while now, and it's just time to shut it down for good."

"We're planning on doing this in two stages. Everything will continue to function as-is until the end of February (can anyone say shutdown party?). At that point, we'll turn off the SMS service and the site will enter read-only mode.
